Legendary Battle

battle packed with most (or all) Rangers from Mighty Morphin through Super Megaforce

Spoiler Warning: This article concerns a season which is currently ongoing. Some spoilers may be found below.

History

Megaforce

Before and during his tenure as the Red Mega Ranger, Troy had a number of dreams1 (and flashbacks thereof2) which featured a large battle (mostly matching events below).

Super Megaforce

During the Mega Rangers' final confrontation with Armada forces, the team was aided by most or all of the so-called "Legendary Rangers" (Ranger teams which preceded the Mega Rangers)3.

Shot Analysis

In real life, the Legendary Battle consisted of a mixture of sentai footage and original New Zealand footage, each with differing arrangements and numbers of Rangers present. For example, some Rangers appeared only in sentai footage, and some of those may be regarded as erroneous (see sentai mismatch). Further, even among New Zealand footage, certain shots contained conflicting mixtures of Rangers.

The general sequence of events was as follows:

  • Various Legendary Ranger teams arrive and pose on quarry ledges (New Zealand).
  • Wide shot: the quarry ledges around the unmorphed Mega Rangers are now lined with Legendary Ranger teams (New Zealand). A few rosters differ from the close-up team shots.
  • Various Legendary Ranger teams turn to leave their ledges (New Zealand). Rosters match arrival/pose shots.
  • Mixed Legendary Rangers approach the unmorphed Mega Rangers below; those in front (Tommy and others) remove their helmets (New Zealand). More mixed Legendary Rangers approach the Mega Rangers from behind. The helmetless Legendary Rangers speak to the Mega Rangers; the Mega Rangers morph, and helmets are re-donned.
  • The morphed Mega Rangers and Tommy now stand at the front of a triangle formation (New Zealand). The formation consists of most of the Rangers who approached the Mega Rangers (from either direction); matching teams are now grouped together, but few teams are complete.
  • Mixed Legendary Rangers strike ready positions (one New Zealand shot, one sentai). The sentai shot matches the sentai triangle formation (below), while the New Zealand shot does not match the New Zealand triangle formation.
  • The Mega Rangers and Tommy charge ahead, followed by others from the triangle formation (New Zealand).
  • Various Ranger teams charge ahead in a new triangle formation (sentai). This formation now includes Japanese-exclusive teams (see New Powers); newer teams are in front and older mostly in back. This group is first seen charging toward the camera in a ground-level shot, and then in a high-angle shot from behind; in the high-angle shot, some older Japanese-exclusive teams have been digitally painted over to look more generic.
  • The battle rages (mostly sentai, but with New Zealand inserts). Some Rangers who appear in this sentai footage are not seen in any New Zealand footage; this includes a few glimpses of Japanese-exclusive Rangers.
  • Afterward, Tommy speaks with the unmorphed Mega Rangers (New Zealand). Behind him are mixed Legendary Rangers from the previous New Zealand triangle group (only Tommy is helmetless now). All teleport away.

Team Notes

New Powers

  • No "new powers" teams appeared in New Zealand footage (in this episode, anyway).
  • In sentai footage throughout the Legendary Battle, numerous "new powers" teams were visible, though generally briefly, in the background, or seen from a distance; see Super Sentai for details.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

  • The Green Ranger appeared alongside the main five Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in the wide ledge shot but no other ledge shots.
  • Green was the only Mighty Morphin Power Ranger to appear in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), Green appeared alongside his teammates (who were further back in the sentai triangle, per chronological order). The White Ranger also appeared, closer to the Dairanger team (he was actually on the side of the Dairanger team closer to the Alien Rangers rather than the Mighty Morphin team).
  • During the battle itself, the main five Rangers appeared; Green and White did not (but see note at Ninja Storm, below).

Alien Rangers

  • All five Alien Rangers appeared in the wide ledge shot (no close-up ledge shots).
  • All five also appeared in the New Zealand triangle group and the sentai charge (high-angle shot).
  • During the battle itself, all five appeared (alongside the Ninja Storm Rangers).

Zeo Rangers

  • Only four Zeo Rangers (I through IV) appeared in ledge shots.
  • Only three Zeo Rangers (II through IV) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, Zeo Rangers I was visible, as were IV and V (partially).
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), all six Zeo Rangers appeared together.
  • During the battle itself, Zeo Ranger I appeared prominently, with Zeo Ranger V visible behind her; the others did not appear.

Turbo Rangers

  • All five Turbo Rangers appeared in ledge close-ups, but Red appeared to be absent in the wide shot (though this wide shot was followed by another close-up in which Red was present).
  • Only three Turbo Rangers (Green, Yellow, and Pink) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, Blue was visible, as was Pink (partially).
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), all five Turbo Rangers appeared together.
  • During the battle itself, only three (again Green, Yellow, and Pink) appeared (New Zealand insert).

Space Rangers

  • All six Space Rangers appeared in the wide ledge shot (no close-up ledge shots).
  • Only three Space Rangers (Blue, Pink, and Silver) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), all six Space Rangers were together.
  • None of the Space Rangers appeared in the battle itself.

Galaxy Rangers

  • The five Galaxy Rangers and Magna Defender appeared together in ledge shots.
  • Blue and Yellow were absent from the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), the five Galaxy Rangers were together without Magna Defender visible.
  • Only the five Galaxy Rangers appeared in the battle itself; in Troy's earlier dream, the Red Galaxy Ranger was also seen projecting fire from his hands4.

Lightspeed Rangers

  • All six Lightspeed Rangers appeared together in ledge shots.
  • Only three Lightspeed Rangers (Red, Pink, and Titanium) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group (though the actual triangle formation lacked Titanium).
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, Red was visible, as was Blue (partially).
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), the main five Lightspeed Rangers were together without Titanium visible.
  • None of the Lightspeed Rangers appeared in the battle itself, but in one of Troy's earlier dreams, the main five appeared together without Titanium5.

Time Force Rangers

  • All six Time Force Rangers appeared together in the wide ledge shot (no close-up ledge shots).
  • Only two Time Force Rangers (Red and Quantum) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group (though the actual triangle formation lacked Quantum).
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, Yellow was visible, as was Green's arm.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), all six appeared together.
  • None of the Time Force Rangers appeared in the battle itself.

Wild Force Rangers

  • Only the main five Wild Force Rangers appeared together in ledge shots.
  • Only three Wild Force Rangers (Red, Blue, and White) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), all six Wild Force Rangers appeared together; Lunar Wolf was also visible in the ground shot.
  • All six Rangers appeared together during the battle itself.

Ninja Storm Rangers

  • Only the three Wind Rangers appeared in ledge shots.
  • Only Red and Blue appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), the Wind Rangers were joined by the Thunder Rangers and Green Samurai Ranger.
  • During the battle itself, the Wind Rangers, Thunders, and Green all appeared (alongside the Alien Rangers). (As a curious note, Tommy's vocalizations seemed to be dubbed in during this scene; are we supposed to interpret this Ranger as being Mighty Morphin Green, who otherwise didn't appear in the battle itself?)

Dino Rangers

  • Only four Dino Rangers (three plus White) appeared in ledge shots.
  • Only three Dino Rangers (Yellow, Blue, and White) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group (Red appeared very briefly but not in most shots).
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, all four (three plus White) appeared.
  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), the five Dino Rangers appeared together; Dino Black was also (barely) visible in the ground shot.
  • None of the Dino Rangers appeared in the battle itself.

SPD Rangers

  • Only the main five SPD Rangers appeared in the wide ledge shot (no close-up ledge shots).
  • All five main SPD Rangers appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.
  • In the brief pre-charge New Zealand shot, Yellow and Green were visible.
  • In the brief pre-charge sentai shot, Blue's arm was barely visible.

Overdrive Rangers

  • Only the main five Overdrive Rangers appeared in ledge shots.
  • Only three (Red, Black, and Pink) appeared in the New Zealand triangle group.

  • In the sentai charge (high-angle shot), the five Mega Rangers were joined by Robo Knight rather than Silver.
  • The five Rangers appeared in the battle itself (included some New Zealand inserts), as did both Robo Knight and Silver (Silver was exclusively in New Zealand inserts).

Q&A

Was every known Ranger and helper in the Legendary Battle?

It's easier to answer the inverse; the following Rangers and helpers made no appearance in any footage (though this isn't to say they couldn't have been present):

Should any Legendary Battle footage be overlooked?

This is a subjective call. The sentai footage (particularly the high-angle charge) was noteworthy for including a number of Rangers which were conspicuously absent from New Zealand footage (notably, Zeo Ranger V and the Black Dino Ranger).

The high-angle charge was, in fact, the only sighting (tiny sightings though they were) of the following Rangers:

By overlooking the sentai charge overall — ground-level and high-angle shots together — the aforementioned Rangers would be unverified, as would the following Rangers and helpers:

If all sentai footage were overlooked, the aforementioned two groups would be unverified, as would the following:

Some fans may choose to merge the rosters from New Zealand and sentai footage (or even expand the roster to include Rangers and helpers who were absent from both). Others may limit the roster to teams which were present in New Zealand footage (that is, all of the main Power Rangers teams and none of the "new powers" teams) but add to the New Zealand roster members of these teams who appeared only in sentai footage. Regardless of the overall approach, some customization may be required, notably to handle overlapping Tommy Rangers (which the New Zealand footage apparently addressed intentionally).

Didn't Troy say there were over a hundred Legendary Rangers?

Surveying the Ranger Keys in the Command Center (among which "new powers" keys were never seen), Troy said8:

"It's not just us. Look around you. All the Rangers who came before us are here too, and they entrusted us with their power… because they believe in us. So really, we're not just five. We're over a hundred, all fighting for Earth!"

Does this require that the "over a hundred" description also apply to the Legendary Rangers who would later arrive in person? (Of course, technically many numbers are over a hundred.)

What are the maximum and minimum numbers of Legendary Rangers that could've been present in the battle?

Here are the ranges, using rosters from New Zealand ledge shots as minimums:

These numbers could produce the following totals (though there are many more possible combinations as well):

  • 83 helpers/Rangers using conservative New Zealand ledge numbers
  • 117 using all members of all teams (sentai and evil Rangers excluded)
  • 205 using all members of all teams (sentai and evil Rangers included)

Who was inside each suit, and which Rangers should be omitted for logistical reasons?

Technically, we only know the following:

If one assumes no Rangers or helpers had never-before-seen identities, most identities can be assumed without conflict. Complications follow:

  • With Tommy revealed to be Mighty Morphin Green, there would seem to be no one left to be Mighty Morphin White, Zeo Ranger V, or the Black Dino Ranger (setting aside the possibility of a clone or time-travel duplicate). It's then perhaps no surprise that New Zealand footage omitted all but Green.
  • Of the five Turbo Rangers, all but Blue had two sets of users; their earlier set (Tommy, Adam, Tanya, and Kat), however, were the only known users of their respective Zeo powers, while their later set (T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie) were the only known users of their respective Space powers (T.J. and Cassie in particular were seen in the Space suits). Some fans assume the Robot Rangers could have assumed the roles of these four Turbo Rangers (though this leaves an unused Justin or robot Justin).
  • While the Red, Black, and Pink MMPR had two sets of users, their later set (Rocky, Adam, and Kat) were the only known users of their respective Zeo powers, which would seem to require Jason as Red (leaving Trey as the Gold Zeo Ranger), Zack as Black, and Kimberly as Pink.

Other unresolved identities are as follows:

  • Mighty Morphin Yellow could be either Trini or Aisha. (Does it matter if Red and Black were originals Jason and Zack rather Rocky and Adam? Should actor availability have any bearing on our assumptions here?)
  • Did the Magna Defender have to be Mike Corbett, given that the original Magna Defender apparently died9?
  • Did Jack, Sky, and Bridge revert to their original SPD Ranger colors? Or if Bridge remained Red as last seen10, who would have been Blue and Green? Or could the SPD Rangers have traveled back from a point in time within SPD in which all still had their original colors?

Zeo Ranger V was sort of visible. Could Tommy have switched powers mid-battle?

It's perhaps not impossible, but he was seen morphed as the Green Ranger before and after the battle (though not during, technically). No direct precedent exists (outside of the Super Mega Rangers via their Ranger Keys) for a Ranger to switch between powers on the fly, except perhaps for the following:

Could the Turbo Rangers be explained by the Zeo Rangers (or Space Rangers) switching powers mid-battle?

Probably not, given that the wide ledge shot showed four Zeo Rangers, four (?) Turbo Rangers, and five Space Rangers in the same shot.

Could any of the Rangers have been personless manifestations akin to Jungle Fury's Spirit Rangers?

There's no evidence to support (or refute) this idea, except that a handful of the Rangers present revealed they were their original identities.

How did all these Rangers get their powers back? A lot of them lost their powers last we saw.

That answer would probably be relevant to how the Super Mega Rangers were able to use these powers with Ranger Keys, but fundamentally, we don't know.

How did the SPD Rangers travel back in time to join in the battle?

Same answer as above. Some fans might note the SPD Rangers seen here could have been the modern-day predecessors of the Rangers from SPD's year 2025, but the Omega Ranger proves to be an extra wrinkle if his footage isn't overlooked.

Did the four future Time Force Rangers travel back in time to join in the battle?

One might assume, unless we imagine new teammates serving alongside Wes. If they did travel back in time, are we to assume they (like Wes, apparently) were more than a decade older than they were in their Wild Force crossover17?

How did the RPM Rangers travel from their dimension?

It wasn't stated outright, but Professor Cog, the Turbo Falcon Zord, and the RPM Ranger Keys all demonstrated the ability to open a wormhole between dimensions18.

Were the Ranger Keys still operational after the Legendary Rangers showed up in person?

Orion was seen using his silver key during a special attack near the end of the battle. Otherwise, Troy and Orion had been seen using the Space Ranger powers immediately before the battle, but no Legendary changes occurred during or after the battle.

Where did all the Legendary Rangers go afterward? Outer space?

Unknown; after Tommy said, "it's time for us to leave," he and all the Rangers seen in the area then simply flew into the sky as golden balls of light (knocking the unmorphed Mega Rangers back). A giant golden glow then appeared over a roughly continent-sized portion of the Earth (with newly-lighting specks at its expanding edges), and numerous golden specks of indeterminate size then seemed to drift away from the Earth as the golden region faded.

As to whether the outward-floating specks were supposed to be Rangers or just some sort of cosmetic particle effect:

  • Some viewers could compare the specks to the balls of light into which the Rangers had just been seen transforming. We could also note, however, that the speck-floating was preceded by a golden wave expanding seemingly outward over the surface of the planet rather than spaceward.
  • We don't know why the Rangers would have headed into space (pending English dialog from the actual episode).
  • If it makes a difference, there appeared to be roughly 260–280 specks on-screen during the sequence (feel free to count them yourself); as indicated above, including unseen Rangers/helpers (and evil Rangers), as well as all sentai teams up to this point, would barely exceed 200.
