In modern day (and before Lauren was revealed), Jayden was described as "the eighteenth leader of the Samurai Power Rangers"1. Few of his seventeen predecessors and their teammates were ultimately revealed in-show.
Long ago, "the first Samurai Rangers" reportedly thwarted a Nighlok invasion which flooded a city2. This Red Ranger also created the black box3; his teammates included a prankster Green and an unamused Blue4 (if Pink and Yellow existed on this team, their traits were not described).
In the standard prologue played before most Samurai and Super Samurai episodes, a narrator spoke of a Nighlok invasion "centuries ago in Japan" which had been had been thwarted by "samurai warriors" using "power symbols passed down from parent to child." During this exposition, five silhouetted warriors were shown morphing into Samurai Rangers. This team may or may not have been the "first Samurai Rangers" described above.

The Grand Shogun was a figure who reportedly sealed away the Bull Zord (the first of its kind) 300 years ago5. His spirit, resembling a Red Samurai Ranger in Shogun Mode, bestowed Shogun Mode on the modern team after Jayden had tamed the Bull6. The Grand Shogun may or may not have had teammates (see discussion below), and he may or may not have been the original Red Ranger described above.
While Lauren and Jayden were young, a team of Samurai Rangers led by the siblings' father barely managed to defeat Master Xandred and his forces7. It isn't clear whether any members of this team survived (see discussion below). Kevin's father, from whom Kevin received the Dragon Folding Zord8, may or may not have been the previous Blue Ranger.
The following individuals were Rangers during the events of Samurai and Super Samurai (also included are siblings of the present-day team):
|Lauren||served as Red Ranger and team leader after mastering the sealing symbol|
|Jayden||served as Red Ranger in Lauren's absence|
|Kevin||served as Blue Ranger|
|Mike||served as Green Ranger|
|Mia||served as Pink Ranger|
|Terry||Mia's younger brother (no mention of samurai training, if any)|
|Serena||intended to serve as Yellow Ranger but grew ill|
|Emily||served as Yellow Ranger in Serena's stead|
|Antonio||served as Gold Ranger (no known predecessors)|
